Preheat the oven to 190 degrees. Grease an oval dish with butter. Slice the potatoes thinly and layer a third on the bottom of the dish evenly. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Pour 0.3 cups of cream on top and sprinkle with 0.25 cups of grated cheese. Repeat the layers 2 times. Bake for about 45 minutes until the potatoes are tender and golden. Remove from the oven and keep warm.

Arrange the mushrooms in a circle on the gratin, pour a quarter cup of cream over them, and sprinkle with a quarter cup of cheese. Bake in the oven for another 20 minutes.
