Napoleon cake is one of the most popular and beloved treats of Russian cuisine. Its history dates back to the early 19th century when a multi-layered pie named after Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte appeared in France. In Russia, the dessert took on its unique form, becoming a symbol of tenderness and sophistication. This recipe offers a convenient way to prepare it using ready-made puff pastry. Crispy layers soaked in airy custard with vanilla notes create a delightful combination of textures. Berries or fruits can be added for freshness if desired. Napoleon is an ideal choice for festive occasions and cozy evenings, as its refined taste and delicate structure make each bite a pleasure.

1
Roll out the dough, cut it to the desired shape, and bake in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes. Bake the scraps as well to make crumbs from them later.
- Puff pastry: 500 g
2
Put milk with sugar on low heat and bring to a boil. In a separate container, mix starch with eggs until smooth.
- Milk: 500 ml
- Sugar: 150 g
- Cornstarch: 75 g
- Chicken egg: 2 pieces
3
Slowly pour hot sweet milk into the egg mixture in a thin stream while whisking with a mixer or whisk to prevent the eggs from curdling. Gradually reintroduce the mixture back into the hot milk and stir over very low heat. The cream will thicken immediately, so stir vigorously. Remove from heat immediately, mix, and strain through a sieve.
- Milk: 500 ml
4
Add vanillin to the cream and let it cool. The cream will thicken even more as it cools.
- Vanillin: pinch
5
Whip the soft butter and add the cooled cream to it. Mix with a mixer until smooth.
- Butter: 150 g
6
Assemble the cake. You can add fruits or berries to a couple of layers if desired.
