Onion rings in batter are a classic American appetizer that captivates with their crispy crust and tender texture inside. The perfect combination of sweet onion and flavorful breading makes this dish an essential companion for parties, family dinners, and snacks at cafes. The roots of this dish trace back to American diners of the 20th century, where it quickly gained popularity due to its simplicity and amazing taste. The batter made from flour, salt, pepper, and water gives the rings an airy texture, while the sesame coating adds light nutty notes. Fried to a golden brown, they become the perfect complement to sauces—from classic ketchup to creamy garlic dips. Served hot or cold, they remain irresistibly appetizing.

1
We clean the onion, cut it into rings, and separate them into individual rings.
- Onion: 2 pieces
2
Pour flour into a bowl, add salt and black pepper, gradually pour in boiled water to achieve a batter consistency like for pancakes. Let the batter rest for 10 minutes.
- Wheat flour: 6 tablespoons
- Salt: 1 teaspoon
- Ground black pepper: pinch
- Water: 150 ml
3
Mix breadcrumbs and white sesame separately.
- Breadcrumbs: 4 tablespoons
- Sesame: 2 tablespoons
4
We dip the onion rings in batter on all sides.
5
Immediately dip in the breading. The breading should cover the rings on all sides. This procedure is conveniently done with two forks or chopsticks.
6
Fry the onion rings in small batches in a large amount of boiling refined sunflower oil over medium heat on both sides until golden brown.
7
Place the fried onion rings on a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Serve warm or cold as an appetizer.
