Clean the fish, gut it, remove the heads and fins, and wash thoroughly.

Slice the onion into thin rings.

Layer onions and fish at the bottom of a thick-walled dish, placing bay leaves, pepper, and cloves between the layers, and sprinkling the fish with salt.

Mix vegetable oil with vinegar and water, then pour the mixture over the fish.

Cover the dish with a lid and simmer the fish for 1.5–2 hours on low heat (on the stove or in the oven).
