Shortbread cookies are a classic treat of Ukrainian cuisine, known for their delicate texture and rich buttery flavor. The origins of this simple yet beloved recipe trace back to deep European baking traditions, where the combination of flour, butter, and sugar creates the base for many desserts. These cookies are soft inside and crispy outside, especially when dusted with powdered sugar. They can be served with tea or coffee and also used as a base for other desserts. The simple preparation method makes them ideal even for beginner cooks. The light sweetness and subtle vanilla aroma turn shortbread cookies into a cozy treat that fills the home with warmth and pleasant memories.

1
Beat the egg and sugar, then add the butter cut into pieces. If the butter is from the freezer, it can be melted in a water bath.
- Chicken egg: 1 piece
- Sugar: 100 g
- Butter: 100 g
2
In a separate container, mix vanilla sugar, sifted flour, and baking powder.
- Vanilla sugar: pinch
- Wheat flour: 250 g
- Baking powder: 0.5 teaspoon
3
Combine the ingredients from two containers to form a dough. Cover it with plastic wrap or a towel and let it rest for 20 minutes. Add flour if the dough sticks to your hands.
- Wheat flour: 250 g

The thickness when rolling should be about 5 mm. Ready-made shapes or a glass can be used for cutting. If the dough is too thin, the cookies will burn. A thick layer will extend the cooking time.
5
Line the baking tray with parchment paper. Preheat the oven in advance. Bake for 10 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Dust the finished cookies with powdered sugar.
- Powdered sugar: to taste
