Cabbage casserole is a cozy and simple dish of Russian cuisine that combines the tenderness of stewed cabbage with aromatic spices and a soft cheese crust. Its roots trace back to traditional village recipes where housewives aimed to create healthy and hearty meals from available ingredients. The casserole is airy due to the eggs, while garlic and spices add zest. Cheese, especially cheddar, adds richness and an appetizing aroma. This versatile dish can be served as a side or main course, complemented with meat or chicken. The simplicity of preparation and availability of ingredients make cabbage casserole an ideal choice for a family dinner when craving something tasty, homemade, and comforting.

1
We finely shred the cabbage, then salt and press it to release juice and reduce in volume.
- White cabbage: 250 g
- Salt: to taste
2
We add eggs; if the whites are whipped beforehand, the casserole will be fluffier; I didn't whip them in this case. Season with garlic, pepper, coriander, and turmeric (1 tsp each). You can substitute nutmeg for coriander and turmeric.
- Chicken egg: 2 pieces
- Garlic: 2 cloves
- Ground black pepper: to taste
- Ground coriander: 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric: 1 teaspoon
3
Grate the cheese (I had cheddar), mix part of the cheese into the cabbage.
- Cheese: 50 g
4
Place the cabbage in a baking dish and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
- Cheese: 50 g
5
Bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

Those interested can add chicken or minced meat to the basic casserole recipe.
