Mix sugar, cornstarch, salt, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Add milk and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook while stirring until the mixture thickens for a couple of minutes. Remove from heat, stir in diced butter, add vanilla and rum. Cool down.

Place half of the vanilla wafers at the bottom of a 20x20 cm baking dish, top with a third of sliced bananas, and pour a third of the milk-butter mixture. Repeat for two more layers.
