Orange Peel Jam

8 servings

240 minutes

Orange peel jam is a delicate and aromatic treat from Italian cuisine, where the art of using every ingredient is revered. This jam has a rich citrus flavor, with the sweetness of sugar harmonizing with the tangy notes of lemon juice and a light hint of ginger. It not only reveals the depth of orange flavor but also transforms seemingly simple peels into an exquisite dessert. In Italy, this jam is often served with warm bread or as an accompaniment to cheese, allowing one to enjoy its complex aroma. The secret to its preparation lies in careful soaking and repeated boiling, making the texture tender and the taste richer. It's a delightful treat that offers cozy moments of enjoyment with a cup of tea.

Cooking steps
  • 1

Wash the oranges thoroughly and pour boiling water over them to remove the layer of preservatives from the surface. Cut them lengthwise into 4 parts, then halve each part. Remove the pulp, then cut each peel slice in half again, resulting in fairly thin strips.

    Required ingredients:
    1. Oranges3 pieces
  • 2

Place the peels in a deep bowl and completely cover with water. Soak for 3 days, regularly changing the water (about 4-5 times a day).

    Required ingredients:
    1. Water300 ml
  • 3

Then, remove the albedo (the white part on the inside of the peel) from each strip with a knife. Roll each strip into a spiral and thread it onto a string like beads. If the orange has a thin skin, you can skip removing the albedo. In this case, roll the spirals before soaking and pour water over the finished beads.

  • 5

In a large pot, boil a syrup of water and sugar, add the prepared beads, bring to a boil, and simmer for 20-30 minutes, then turn off and let cool.

    Required ingredients:
    1. Water300 ml
    2. Sugar300 g

After the jam cools down, remove the beads and take out the threads. Pour into a 300 ml jar and store in the refrigerator.
