Real Greek Salad

The main ingredient of the horiatiki salad is feta, a traditional Greek cheese made from sheep's or goat's milk. Its consistency resembles thick cottage cheese, and its taste has a pleasant, unobtrusive sourness. Unlike the salty and sharp feta cheese, which other Europeans often replace feta with in this salad, it does not overpower the taste of fresh vegetables, olives and olive oil.

1
Prepare the necessary ingredients.

2
Thoroughly peel the cucumbers and cut them into large half-moon slices. Place them in a deep salad bowl or a wide dish that is convenient for mixing.
- Cucumbers: 2 pieces

3
Cut the tomatoes into large wedges. Add them to the salad bowl with the cucumbers and mix. It's best to mix the Greek salad by hand, adding a little olive oil at each stage.
- Tomatoes: 2 pieces
- Cucumbers: 2 pieces
- Olive oil: 25 ml

4
Clean the sweet green pepper from seeds and membranes and cut into large cubes. Add to the salad bowl. Mix with other vegetables.
- Green pepper: 1 piece

5
Slice the red onion into thin half-rings, then separate into thin petals by hand. Add to the other vegetables and mix everything again.
- Red onion: 1 head

6
Add pitted olives to the salad bowl (you can buy pitted olives or remove the pits yourself by crushing each olive with the flat side of a knife and removing the pit).
- Olives: 10 pieces

7
Cut the firm feta into rectangular slices 1 cm thick. To prevent the cheese from sticking to the blade, you can dip the knife in warm water beforehand.
- Feta cheese: 300 g

8
Mix the vegetables in the salad bowl again and distribute them onto plates. Top each serving with 2 slices of feta. Generously drizzle with olive oil.
- Olive oil: 25 ml

9
Slightly salt the salad and sprinkle with dried oregano.
- Salt: pinch
- Dried oregano: 1 teaspoon

10
Sprinkle with olive oil again on top and serve immediately while the vegetables are still juicy.
- Olive oil: 25 ml
