Side dish stewed cabbage with sausages

Braised cabbage with sausages is a hearty and simple side dish deeply rooted in Russian cuisine. It combines the tenderness of soft cabbage, the spiciness of sausages, and a light tomato tang from ketchup. This dish evokes memories of home lunches and the coziness of family gatherings, while its taste brings back childhood when such cabbage was traditional in school cafeterias. Preparation requires minimal effort: cabbage is stewed to the desired softness, sausages add richness, and spices and ketchup enhance the composition with pleasant spiciness. It can be served as a standalone dish or as a side to potato dishes, creating a harmonious and balanced flavor. The simplicity of preparation and availability of ingredients make it a favorite choice for everyday menus.

1
We chop the cabbage and send it to the cauldron or a large pot.
- Cabbage: 1.5 kg
2
We pour in water and stew everything.. everyone likes different cabbage - very soft or a bit crunchy. I cook it to be soft like in the school cafeteria.
3
Next, we cut the sausages into circles. They can be fried (in oil) or just thrown directly into the cabbage.
- Sausages: 6 pieces
4
Add ketchup to taste, more or less. Cook for another 5-7 minutes, and voila, you get a great side dish for potatoes.
- Ketchup: to taste
