Homemade Coconut Milk

4 servings

20 minutes

Homemade coconut milk is a creamy, natural drink with a rich nutty flavor. Its preparation dates back to ancient traditions of tropical regions where coconut is valued for its nutrition and versatility. With its smooth texture and pleasant aroma, coconut milk is perfect for making desserts, sauces, and beverages. In Europe, it has become popular as a healthy alternative to traditional milk, especially among those following a plant-based diet. Its uses are diverse: it can be added to smoothies, porridge, baked goods, and used in exotic culinary recipes. This drink is easy to make at home: just blend the coconut flesh, soak it in water and strain thoroughly. The leftovers can be dried to turn into fragrant coconut flakes for further use.

Cooking steps

The amount of water depends on the desired richness of the coconut milk (200 to 400 ml). The less water you use, the richer and creamier the milk will be.

  • 2

Grate the coconut flesh on a fine grater. There is no need to remove the thin brown skin of the coconut, as most of the fats and various beneficial substances are concentrated underneath. If you cut off the skin, your coconut milk will be less rich. You can also chop the coconut flesh in a blender instead of grating it. In this case, you won't get beautiful coconut flakes, but the milk will be richer.

Soak the coconut flakes in water and knead them by hand. Mix the coconut flakes with water well, as if washing clothes. It's not necessary to do this by hand; you can blend everything in a blender.

    Required ingredients:
    1. Water300 ml

Take a sieve with fine mesh or any fabric, like several layers of cheesecloth. You will also need a new container for coconut milk. Pour the coconut flakes with water into the sieve or fabric. Squeeze thoroughly into the new container.

Set the pulp aside in a separate container. It can be dried to make excellent coconut flakes. You can bake coconut cookies from it, for example. The pulp can be dried in a vegetable and fruit dryer or in the oven. For this, set the oven to the lowest temperature, spread the pulp in a thin layer on a baking sheet, and leave it in the oven with the door open.
