Before becoming the New York sour, this cocktail was called the Continental Sour and the Southern Whiskey Sour, and it was actually invented in Chicago in the late 1870s.

Pour bourbon and sugar syrup into a shaker with ice, squeeze lemon juice, add bitters and egg white. Shake.
- Bourbon: 50 ml
- Sugar syrup: 10 ml
- Lemon juice: 25 ml
- Bitter: 2 ml
- Egg white: 1 piece

Strain into a small glass with three or four ice cubes. Pour in red wine. Garnish with a ribbon of lemon zest.
