Potato-meat casserole with mushrooms and cheese crust is a hearty and aromatic dish of European cuisine, perfect for family dinners. Its history originates from home cooking traditions where housewives aimed to create a nutritious and tasty meal from available ingredients. The combination of tender potatoes, juicy minced meat, fragrant mushrooms, and gooey cheese makes the casserole a true gastronomic delight. The crispy golden crust adds a special flavor and texture, while herbs provide freshness. This dish is ideal as a main hot treat – it can be served with a light salad or homemade sauces. The versatility of the recipe allows for experimentation with different types of meat and spices, making the casserole a favorite dish in home menus.

1
Chop 2 heads of onion finely and sauté in vegetable oil for a few minutes until light golden. Add minced meat, season with salt and pepper, add spices, and fry until mostly liquid evaporates.
- Onion: 3 heads
- Minced meat: 1 kg
- Salt: to taste
- Ground black pepper: to taste
2
While the minced meat is frying, peel and slice the potatoes thinly. Grease a deep baking tray with vegetable oil and layer the potato slices overlapping. Keep in mind that the thicker your slices, the longer it will take to cook the dish. I made them about 3-4 mm thick. So, lightly salt and pepper the layer of overlapping potato slices. You can add some grated cheese between the layers.
- Potato: 4 pieces
- Russian cheese: 100 g
- Salt: to taste
- Ground black pepper: to taste
3
Meanwhile, we remove the almost ready minced meat from the heat and evenly distribute it over the layer of potatoes.
- Minced meat: 1 kg
- Potato: 4 pieces
4
Sauté the mushrooms with onions slightly and layer them as the third layer on our casserole.
- Champignons: 500 g
- Onion: 3 heads
5
Lightly beat 3 eggs in a separate bowl and evenly pour them over the casserole.
- Chicken egg: 3 pieces
6
Sprinkle with coarsely chopped greens and evenly grate cheese on top in a thick layer.
- Green: 1 bunch
- Russian cheese: 100 g
7
Bake in the oven at 180–200 degrees for about half an hour.
