Squid with mashed potatoes is an exquisite dish of Spanish cuisine that combines the tenderness of seafood and the velvety texture of potatoes. Spaniards traditionally love seafood, and squid holds a special place in the gastronomy of this country. The dish is characterized by its lightness and rich flavor – tender squid, lightly sautéed with anise and spices, reveal their marine aroma, while a splash of lemon juice adds freshness. Creamy mashed potatoes serve as the perfect complement, creating a harmony of flavors. This recipe is an excellent option for both a cozy home dinner and a festive table, pairing wonderfully with a glass of white wine. The simplicity of preparation makes it accessible even for those just starting to explore Spanish cuisine.

1
Clean the squid bodies from the thin film.
- Squid: 500 g
2
We put the squid in salted water. Boil for literally 2-3 minutes. If you overcook the squid, they will not be soft enough.
- Squid: 500 g
3
Peel the potatoes. Put them to boil.
- Potato: 500 g
4
Once the squid is cooked, we take them out and cool them down. We cut them into strips.
- Squid: 500 g
5
In a heated pan, add anise and lightly fry. Then add the squid. Sprinkle with spices and mix everything thoroughly.
- Squid: 500 g
- Seasonings: to taste
6
We squeeze juice from half a lemon. At the end, we add a little soy sauce (the main thing here is not to overdo it, as it can make the dish too salty). We mix everything thoroughly and fry until ready.
- Lemon: 1 piece
- Sunflower oil: to taste
7
Make mashed potatoes from boiled potatoes as usual. On a plate, place the mashed potatoes, squid, 3 lemon wedges (which can be used to drizzle over the squid), and a bit of greenery.
- Potato: 500 g
- Squid: 500 g
- Lemon: 1 piece
