Norwegian Herring Sandwiches

Norwegian herring sandwiches are the quintessence of northern cuisine, combining freshness, spiciness, and simplicity. Historically in Norway, herring was a staple food and over time found its place in national recipes. This sandwich is a harmony of soft butter, crispy baguette, fresh salad, juicy cucumber, and aromatic herring complemented by a tangy lemon accent. The taste is rich and layered: tender, salty with fresh vegetable notes and pleasant acidity. Such a sandwich is perfect as an appetizer or light snack, especially paired with cool beer or traditional Norwegian drinks. Its simplicity makes it an excellent choice for cozy home meals or festive gatherings. A classic of Norwegian cuisine that conveys the spirit of northern coziness!

1
The French baguette needs to be sliced. Spread butter on each piece of bread (2-3 cm wide). Place the buttered bread on a serving plate.
- French baguette: 1 piece
- Butter: to taste
2
Wash the lettuce leaves, fold them in half, and place them on buttered bread.
- Green salad: 1 bunch
3
Slice the cucumber into pieces similar in size to the bread, so it doesn't stick out or is too small. Place the sliced cucumber on the buttered bread and top with lettuce leaves.
- Cucumbers: 1 piece
4
Get herring. Preferably canned, with various flavors. I recommend the wine with spicy herbs, usually pre-sliced. The herring should be placed on top of the cucumber on the sandwiches.
- Herring: 200 g
5
Cut the lemon into wedges and place each half on top of the herring on the sandwich.
- Lemon: 1 piece
